On 16 March, 2020, Clint Steindl was four days out from playing his 200th NBL game.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 had other ideas and, after multiple delays to the commencement of the 2020/21 season, the Wildcats sharpshooter is finally set to reach the prestigious milestone.
The 31-year-old said he’s proud of the achievement.
“It’s a pretty good feeling to be playing 200 NBL games, a little bit of a break in there when I went over to Europe, but I’ve played most of those game over here in Perth and that’s been really exciting. My family and I have oved it over here,” he said.
“It’s been a journey for me, going from college up to starting my career out in North Queensland, for a few years with the teams up there, then over to Europe then finding my way to the Cats.
“It (my career) started with a few DNPs, and so far it’s got me a couple of championships, so I’ve definitely tracked in the right direction.”
Clint Steindl has played 89 games for the Perth Wildcats after starting his career at Cairns and then moving to Townsville.
He’s averaged 7.8 points per game over his career, shooting the three ball at 39 per cent.
2019/20 was his best season in red, averaging 9.2 points per game, and bumping that figure up to 11.3 in the post-season, hitting 15 of 29 from range to help the Wildcats to the 2020 title – his second with the club.
Steindl has dropped 143 threes for the Perth Wildcats, and credits an adjustment to his shot as a teenager in helping his development as an elite three-point shooter.
“There was a point when I needed to change my shot, and I tell you one thing, I was very stubborn about it! But I realised if I wanted to make a career out of it I needed to change my shot. Just to get that higher release point.”
The Wildcats will look to celebrate the milestone with a win when it opens its season on Sunday at RAC Arena against South East Melbourne Phoenix.
