DrinkWise Match Preview: Wildcats v Hawks at NBL Blitz

The Perth Wildcats return to AIS Arena tonight for their second hit-out of the Blitz, taking on the reigning NBL champions Illawarra Hawks in what promises to be one of the standout contests of the tournament in front of a sold-out Canberra crowd.

The Wildcats enter the matchup on the back of an 84–78 victory over Melbourne United, with the result highlighting the roster's depth and the composure needed to close out tightly contested games. Ben Henshall leading the way against United with 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Game Two of the Blitz presents an opportunity for the Wildcats to build on the momentum created by Dylan Windler, David Okwera and Kristian Doolittle in the opener, while continuing to test the rotations that will prove pivotal during the NBL26 season.

Head coach John Rillie reflected on the win over United and said he is looking forward to the challenge of facing the defending NBL champions.

"It was great to play a game so we could see if we could translate from practice to a game situation.  Melbourne will always test you with their physicality.  

"We will continue laying the foundation for the season as we play the defending champs, Illawarra" said Rillie.

Illawarra, meanwhile, will be out to respond quickly after a 104–83 loss to Adelaide in their Blitz opener.

Will Hickey top-scored with 14 points, supported by Daniel Grida with 12 and former Wildcat Todd Blanchfield with 11.

The reigning champions will be eager to showcase their quality and remind the competition why they lifted the trophy last season.

Basketball fans hoping to see Illawarra’s JaVale McGee hit the floor in Canberra will have to wait a little longer. The three-time NBA champion is not set to arrive in Australia until after the Blitz

Wildcats’ assistant coach Keegan Crawford said the clash presents another chance to keep building ahead of NBL26.

“We’re only just getting started as a group, but you can already see the effort and energy we want to bring. The Blitz is about testing ourselves, and going up against the defending champs is a great opportunity to see where we’re at,” added Crawford.

With the Wildcats aiming to consolidate a strong start and the Hawks determined to bounce back, the Red Army can expect an intense match up this evening. 

If the defensive grit and late-game composure shown against United can be replicated, the Wildcats will be well placed to make it two from two at the Blitz.
