DrinkWise NBL26 Seeding Qualifier Final Preview: Wildcats vs Phoenix

Finals basketball begins on the road for the Perth Wildcats as they meet South East Melbourne in Wednesday night’s Seeding Qualifier at John Cain Arena.

Perth are in strong form heading into the post-season, winning 10 of their past 12 games to secure a top four finish. The approach that delivered results across the regular season remains unchanged.

The Phoenix finished third and boast the league’s top-ranked offence, presenting a clear test at both ends of the floor. Their ability to generate scoring through pace, space and perimeter shooting will demand sustained defensive focus from Perth across four quarters.

The regular season series was split 2–2, underlining how little separates the sides.

When the teams last met in Round 19, the Wildcats absorbed an early surge before taking control to secure a 101–93 victory. Dylan Windler led the way with 23 points, Elijah Pepper added 22, and Jo Lual-Acuil Jr contributed 18 in a balanced offensive performance.

South East Melbourne received 28 points from Nathan Sobey and a 20-point double-double from John Brown III in that contest, reinforcing the depth of talent Perth must contain.

Wildcats forward Dylan Windler says the group is embracing the moment as Finals basketball arrives.

“The pressure doesn’t really bother me. It’s more excitement than anything,” Windler said.

“To be able to play in these big games and compete for a title, that’s what you look for as a team. It’s my second year here, I’ve played with a lot of the same guys, a few new faces as well, but when you go through a season together you get close and you want to compete for a championship. You want to win and celebrate that moment together.

“There’s going to be great crowds and big energy, but pressure is a privilege. A lot of teams have already gone home and their seasons are over. We have the privilege of still playing and competing in these games, and that means something.”

The reward for the winner is a Semi-Final series against the Adelaide 36ers. The loser remains alive and will face the winner of the Play-In Qualifier between Melbourne United and the Tasmania JackJumpers on Saturday.

The Wildcats have built their season on standards that hold under pressure. Wednesday night presents another opportunity to prove it, with the Red Army right behind them.
