Inspirational skipper Wagstaff signs on for 17th NBL season

The 38-year-old, who last season broke Ricky Grace’s games record of 482 before becoming the first Wildcats player to reach the 500-game milestone, will add invaluable experience to the roster.

Wagstaff had an excellent NBL25 campaign coming off the bench, averaging 4.2 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.

Wagstaff, who’s captained the club for the past five seasons, stepped up in the playoff series against Melbourne United, averaging 14 minutes per game including 21 in the decider when he scored a lead-changing triple in the final seconds of the heartbreaking one-point loss at John Cain Arena.

He described the decision to go around again as a “no-brainer” and felt good physically and mentally to add another chapter to his decorated NBL career.

“It went pretty quick to be honest,” Wagstaff said.

“There was interest from both parties which is always good and I still feel good physically and mentally which is the main part for me.

“I don’t want to be playing when I don’t feel like I can contribute on the court or off the court and I still think I can play at a good level.

“I’ve never relied on athleticism so I think that’s probably something that works in my favour, so if I can continue to positively affect the game in little spurts, I still feel good mentally and physically so I thought it would be a no-brainer if the club was interested.”

Wildcats Head Coach John Rillie praised Wagstaff on his consistent impact across the year and highlighted his post-season performances.

Rillie said Wagstaff’s signing would give his entire playing group a massive boost.

“A lot has been said about Jesse’s leadership and experience and that all speaks for itself, but his performances alone have warranted another season,” Rillie said.

“Jesse showed during the post-season how much of an impact he can have when he’s on the floor and he played at a high level throughout our NBL25 campaign.

“His remarkable longevity and consistency are a testament to the work he puts in on a day-to-day basis.

“To have him committed for next season gives our whole group a massive boost.”

Wildcats General Manager of Basketball Operations Danny Mills was rapt to bring the six-time NBL champion back as the team hunts an 11th title.

“We're very excited to be able to bring Jesse back for a 17th season at the club,” Mills said.

"As long-time captain of the club, his leadership and championship experience are invaluable.

“He leads by example and sets the standard with his professionalism, work ethic and team-first attitude.”

The tough forward first joined the Wildcats in 2009-10 and won a championship and the NBL’s Rookie of the Year award that season.

He’s currently 13th in the NBL’s all-time games tally with 505 appearances, and could go as high as sixth by the end of the NBL26 season.
