The Perth Wildcats 2021 NBL Indigenous Round uniform focuses on the importance of people coming together, and the role Wildcats home games play in facilitating that.
Like last season, the uniform was designed by Nyoongar Statesperson, Dr. Richard Walley OAM.
“The big theme behind this design is quite a simple theme; it’s bringing people together, taking the game out to people. It’s about the warmth and the heat that the Wildcats radiate, it’s about the energy they produce, it’s about the place they live, the place of the sunshine, where the sun settles in the ocean,” said Dr. Walley.
“In its simplicity, it’s how we knit together as a collective and a cohesive unit of people.”
Dr. Walley said the unprecedented environment we’ve all been living in over the last 14 months influenced the cultural narrative.
“When the restrictions come into play, it shows you much people miss that collectiveness, and that group energy. It’s a fantastic thing for both people and players. That’s the human nature of us being a social collective people.”
Set on a sunburst background, incorporating the colours of Perth Wildcats uniforms past and present, Dr. Walley explained how the centre piece of the design began with a black and white sketch of the mandala.
“It shows the inner circle of the Wildcats has connections that radiate outwards, and those connections are connecting people outside, bringing people in and it’s connecting to that inner-circle as well,” he said.
“Keeping with the theme from last year, we’ve got 10 circles featured, representing the 10 championships that we have. That, I think, is a proud heritage and we should not see that as just a design, but to achieve that, it takes a lot of work. “
Another similarity to the 2020 design is the speckled red backdrop, representing the crowd you see at a Wildcats home game, and the unique background that each fan has.
The Perth Wildcats will wear the uniform at its 27 May Indigenous Round clash with the Sydney Kings at RAC Arena.
