The American import made a stunning start to his time in Perth, dropping 35 points on debut in the season-opening win over Tasmania at RAC Arena on September 29.
Then came a four-game losing streak where Usher struggled to re-capture the golden form of game one.
A switch to the bench for New Zealander Hyrum Harris followed, helping get both players having a big impact as the Wildcats went on a six-game winning run to turn their season around.
After the move on November 4, Usher reached double figures in 15 of 24 games.
His best performances came in the overtime loss to Melbourne United at John Cain Arena on December 23, hitting 23 points to go with four rebounds, before 24, four and five assists in the win over Sydney at RAC Arena on January 21.
“It’s never a hit to the ego. You have to be resilient to that type of stuff, especially in-house or anything with my teammates mates or my own coaches. If that’s what we think is going to win more games, then I am all for it,” Usher told The West Australian’s The Dribble Podcast about his move to the bench during the season.
“I’m a competitor. At the end of the day, no one wants to not start in basketball, especially at the professional level when I feel like I can. But I’m here to win games, and I’m here to provide what the team needs and bring that next championship to the Perth Wildcats. That is truly my only intention.”
Usher ended up with decent season averages of 12.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.9 steals across his 31 appearances.
He played a little under 25 minutes per game.
