NBL26 DrinkWise Game Preview: Wildcats v JackJumpers

The Perth Wildcats are back in The Jungle at RAC Arena for a blockbuster NBL26 season opener v the Tasmania JackJumpers. With both clubs unveiling fresh talent and plenty of storylines from the offseason, this clash has all the makings of an early-season benchmark.

The Wildcats enter the season opener after an encouraging preseason and the strong momentum built from their now completed roster. Head Coach John Rillie said the Red Army can expect to see a new energy and a group determined to set the tone early.

“We’ve created good excitement around ourselves with how we performed in the preseason and obviously the additions to our roster,” Rillie said. “The Red Army can expect us to put on a good performance. First games always come with a level of nerves, but we’re ready.”

Rillie emphasised that while integrating new faces such as Mason Jones is ongoing, the strength of the returning core has the Wildcats in a good place. He described the preseason as valuable in building cohesion and noted the group is “pushing forward” with the pieces now in place.

JR also singled out the challenge of Tasmania’s new star Bryce Hamilton, a player he has tracked since high school. “His ability to score the ball is exceptional,” Rillie said. “We’ll need to be disciplined and control the game the best we can.”

Recent history between these clubs leans in Perth’s favour. The last time they met, in January during NBL25, the Wildcats dismantled Tasmania 105–73 in Hobart.

Perth dominated from start to finish, holding the JackJumpers to 34% shooting and 7-of-26 from three-point range, while owning a +10 rebounding edge. Dylan Windler stood out with 15 points and 10 rebounds in a complete team performance.

Tasmania have already opened their NBL26 campaign in front of a packed house at MyState Bank Arena, falling just short 88–84 against Melbourne United in a game that featured more than 30 lead changes. Despite the narrow defeat, the JackJumpers unearthed plenty of positives.

New imports Bryce Hamilton and David Johnson immediately showed why they are regarded as some of the best offseason recruits. Hamilton poured in 24 points on 11-of-18 shooting, while Johnson delivered a double-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds and three triples. With head coach Scott Roth pointing to their growth potential and praising the group’s willingness to buy into the system.

Speaking with media ahead of the clash, Wildcats forward Kristian Doolittle reinforced the Wildcats’ team-first mentality heading into the season. He praised how quickly new recruits have bought into Perth’s style and said the team’s strength will come from exploiting opponent weaknesses rather than individual stats.

“As long as we’re winning and doing what it takes, I don’t care whose night it is,” he said.

Doolittle added that re-signing with the club was driven by unfinished business after back-to-back semifinal exits. “I take great pride in chasing a championship and I feel the responsibility to lead by example.”

Tasmania enters hungry to bounce back and prove their new recruits can drive them into the contender conversation. Perth arrives eager to showcase their revamped roster in front of the Red Army.

For the JackJumpers, the question is whether Hamilton and Johnson can replicate their scoring punch away from home and whether Roth’s squad can solve the rebounding battle. For the Wildcats, all eyes will be on how quickly Mason Jones integrates into a system already boasting proven talent and whether Doolittle, Dylan Windler, Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. and company can set the tone physically.

With storylines everywhere and both sides eyeing a fast start to the season, Saturday night’s clash promises to be a fierce early chapter in NBL26.
