Brandon Knight hit the winning shot with eight seconds remaining as the Perth Wildcats defeated Melbourne United 103-102 in a thrilling Multicultural Game in The Jungle.
Trailing by six points with less than two minutes to play, the Wildcats fought back through Kristian Doolittle and Elijah Pepper before Knight delivered at both ends to secure the victory.
Perth's import point guard drew an offensive foul on Cole Anthony to give Perth possession, then buried the pull-up jumper that decided a contest in which neither side could establish a lasting advantage.
FIRST HALF
Perth found early opportunities around the basket, but Melbourne’s reply was immediate, with Luke Travers helping the visitors edge ahead in a closely contested start.
The Wildcats settled into the contest and reclaimed the lead, getting to the foul line and creating second chances on the offensive glass. Doolittle was central to that response, scoring eight points for the term as Perth built a 20-17 advantage.
Jaron Rillie added pressure defensively with two steals, but the Wildcats couldn’t stretch the margin beyond three points. Melbourne stayed within reach through its work on the offensive boards before consecutive Joe Ingles triples turned a 22-19 Perth lead into a three-point deficit.
An Alex Higgins-Titsha offensive rebound gave Perth another opportunity in the closing seconds, with Knight connecting from deep to level the scores. Fabijan Krslovic split his free throws for United to leave the Wildcats trailing 26-25 at quarter-time.
Perth gained the early momentum in the second quarter, scoring seven unanswered points to move ahead 32-28. Rillie helped drive that stretch, creating opportunities for his teammates and finding Cameron Huefner for a three-pointer that gave the Wildcats their biggest lead.
Melbourne responded with consecutive triples from Shea Ili and Cole Anthony, and the teams continued to trade the advantage. Perth stayed in touch through Doolittle and Pepper, but back-to-back turnovers allowed United to move ahead 40-37 and prompted a Wildcats timeout.
The margin remained tight as Perth worked its way back again, with Doolittle completing a three-point play to level the scores at 42-42. Josh Oduro’s presence inside helped United regain the lead, before a Sam Waardenburg dunk pushed the visitors four points clear.
Perth prevented Melbourne from pulling away in the closing stages. Doolittle’s steal led to a Pepper layup, and Anthony Dell’Orso’s floater with eight seconds remaining left the Wildcats trailing 48-46 at halftime.
SECOND HALF
Melbourne made the stronger start after the break, stretching its lead to seven as Perth worked to find its rhythm. Knight helped keep the Wildcats within reach, scoring nine points in the third term, including a three-point play after following up a missed shot.
United continued to find answers, but Perth gradually closed the gap. Jesse Wagstaff provided a lift with five points, and a Dylan Windler steal helped the Wildcats build momentum.
Consecutive three-pointers from Doolittle and Dell’Orso then turned a four-point deficit into a 72-70 Perth lead with just under two-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Melbourne responded again, with Ingles and Travers combining to put United back in front. Travers scored five straight points to push the margin to five in the final minute, but Pepper’s three-pointer with six seconds remaining brought Perth within two, trailing 79-77 at the final break.
The Wildcats carried that momentum into the fourth, with Dell’Orso scoring consecutive baskets to reclaim the lead. Pepper kept Perth attacking the basket, helping the home side move four points clear.
Melbourne stayed close, but a Knight stepback three and Windler’s finish inside had Perth ahead 91-88 approaching the midway point of the quarter.
United swung the contest through Oduro, who scored seven straight points to put Melbourne ahead 95-91. Perth worked back within one before an Ili drive and Ingles three-pointer pushed the visitors’ advantage to six with 1:47 remaining.
Doolittle led the response, driving to the basket before drilling a three after Windler secured an offensive rebound. That cut the margin to one, but Travers tipped in a missed shot for United to leave Perth trailing 102-99 with 44 seconds left.
Pepper made both free throws to bring the Wildcats within one again, setting up Knight’s decisive closing moments.
After drawing the offensive foul on Anthony with 19 seconds remaining, Knight put Perth ahead with his pull-up jumper. Travers missed a three-pointer on Melbourne’s final possession as the Wildcats secured a hard-fought one-point win in front of the Red Army.
