Australia claimed an 84-79 win over New Zealand in Hobart, grinding out the result with stronger execution in the final minutes.

Perth Wildcats guard Elijah Pepper provided an early spark, knocking down a smooth mid-range baseline jumper to settle Australia during a New Zealand run.

The Boomers started well, taking a 27-24 lead after the first quarter before the Tall Blacks responded through Flynn Cameron and Sam Mennenga to give New Zealand a 49-42 half time lead.

Australia swung momentum after the break, with Angus Glover catching fire from deep and Nick Kay steady inside as the Boomers closed the gap to a single point heading into the fourth.

The final term was a defensive grind, but big plays from Kay, Glover, Jack White and Keanu Pinder helped Australia regain control. The Boomers tightened up defensively late, controlled the glass and closed out the match at the free throw line.

John Rillie and the Boomers coaching staff, led by Dean Vickerman, played a key role in maintaining Australia’s composure and guiding the late-game adjustments, securing the win over New Zealand.

Final Score: Boomers 84 v Tall Blacks 79

Game 2 will be played in Wellington on Monday - tip off 2:00pm AWST.
