Rnd19 DrinkWise Game Preview: Wildcats vs Hawks NBL26

The Perth Wildcats arrive in Wollongong with their postseason ticket stamped, as Round 19 presents a hostile road test against an Illawarra side fighting to keep its season alive.

Saturday night marks the Wildcats’ only visit to the Gong this season, and history suggests nothing will come easily.

Perth and Illawarra have met three times already in NBL26, with each game decided by single digits and the results swinging late.

The Wildcats lead the season series 2–1, but margins of eight, one and five points underline how thin the line has been between the two sides.

Perth jumped out of the gates in the opening meeting of the season with a 92–84 win, Illawarra answered with a dramatic one-point victory in late October, and the Wildcats fought their way to a gritty 92–87 HoopsFest victory in January. 

The Wildcats will look to carry momentum from one of their most complete performances of the season, a 101–93 win over second-placed South East Melbourne Phoenix that showcased their depth and composure under pressure. 

Dylan Windler delivered 23 points and 11 rebounds. Elijah Pepper lit it up again from deep with 22 points and four triples, while Jo Lual-Acuil Jr imposed himself around the rim with 18 points, six rebounds and a player of the game performance.

Ben Henshall dictated tempo with nine assists, Kristian Doolittle filled every column of the box score, and captain Jesse Wagstaff delivered when it mattered most, drilling a fourth-quarter three that steadied the Wildcats as the game tightened.

Now that formula gets stress-tested in Wollongong.

Illawarra brings desperation and physicality. Tyler Harvey remains one of the league’s most dangerous scorers and will carry the offensive load, while William Hickey pushes tempo and leads the Hawks in assists.

Daniel Grida has been a constant spark, and JaVale McGee anchors the paint, setting up a heavyweight interior battle with Lual-Acuil Jr that has a way of dictating the night.

The Wildcats have clinched a postseason berth, with ladder positioning and form heading into finals remaining the focus.

Another road win would send a message that this team is not just postseason-bound, but building something formidable at the right time of the season.
