Rnd6 DrinkWise Game Preview: Wildcats vs Hawks NBL26

The Perth Wildcats return to RAC Arena for Indigenous Round on Saturday, hosting the Illawarra Hawks in a rematch of their Round 3 meeting. 

Perth will take confidence into the matchup after a composed 110–78 win over Cairns, delivering strong contributions across all four quarters.

Jo Lual-Acuil Jr, Elijah Pepper, Ben Henshall and Kristian Doolittle set the tone through disciplined defence and sharp ball movement, guiding the Wildcats to one of their most complete performances of the season.

Illawarra will arrive in Perth determined to respond after a heavy defeat in Melbourne against SEM Phoenix, with the 1–4 Hawks searching for a win to get their season back on track. 

The battle inside will again be a major storyline, with Lual-Acuil Jr and McGee set to play crucial roles at both ends. McGee’s size and production demand attention, and Perth will look to limit his impact through physicality, early body work and smart rotations around the rim.

JLA has continued his dominance in the early stages of the Hungry Jacks NBL26 season, averaging 21 points, 2.1 blocks, and 6.9 rebounds per game.

JaVale McGee continues to drive the Hawks’ interior game as one of the league’s top scorers, rebounders and shot-blockers, while Tyler Harvey remains central to their offence with his scoring range and playmaking.

Head Coach John Rillie said the defensive focus must be balanced across the floor.
“Limiting Harvey and McGee is important because they are a formidable duo, but we also need to make sure their other guys don’t get clean catch-and-shoot looks. Players like Todd Blanchfield and the rest of that group are more than capable from three if we don’t respect their strengths.”

Defensively, the Wildcats will be aiming to replicate the standard they set in Cairns. Perth’s ability to pressure the ball, stay connected on the perimeter and contest without fouling was a decisive factor in their last outing, while slowing Wani Swaka Lo Buluk and Mason Peatling who are both shooting at 42.9% from beyond the arc will be central to disrupting Illawarra’s offence.

The last time these teams met, the Wildcats overpowered Illawarra 92–84 in the Open Air Game at RAC Arena. 

The Red Army will be hoping for a similar outcome, as the Perth Wildcats return to their home floor looking to retain their spot at the top end of the NBL26 ladder.
