Perth Wildcats and MSWA are proud to confirm the renewal of their partnership for a second consecutive year, uniting two iconic Western Australian organisations through a shared commitment to community, inclusion and making a lasting impact.
The Wildcats will return to RAC Arena on Thursday 2 October taking on the Illawarra Hawks, for the fan-favourite Open Air Game in support of MSWA, shining a spotlight on the thousands of Western Australians living with neurological conditions.
One of those inspired by the partnership is MSWA client and proud Red Army member, Andrew Grero. A Perth-based artist living with young onset Parkinson’s, Andrew’s passion for the Wildcats began in childhood watching legends like Ricky Grace and James Crawford.
“Some of my first memories are sitting with my family watching the Wildcats in the 1990 finals,” Andrew recalls. “I even remember Dad taking me to the airport to welcome the team home. Now I can’t wait to create those same memories with my son.”
Thirty years later, Andrew’s artwork can be found across Perth, including a commission for the Wildcats’ 40th Anniversary Ball. With the support of MSWA’s specialist teams, he continues to pursue his passion for art while living independently and creatively – reflecting MSWA’s ‘Life, not limits’ ethos. His largest piece to date, a 23m x 7m mural in Bassendean to mark West Coast Suspension’s 100th anniversary, stands as a testament to his resilience and creativity.
“Being diagnosed in 2023 was life-changing, but I chose not to let it define me,” Andrew said. “Instead, I’ve used my art to tell my story and raise funds for charities like MSWA that give vital support to people like me.”
Andrew credits MSWA’s counselling, dietetics, and employment services teams with helping him and his family adapt to life with Parkinson’s. “Their support has been brilliant,” he added.
Debra Packer, MSWA General Manager – Brand, Experience and Community added:
“Supporting people with neurological conditions to continue to do what they love is at the
core of MSWA. Through our supports and services teams, we aim to reduce the limits they
can face every day, and with partnerships such as these, we not only raise awareness for
our cause, but also create meaningful opportunities and lifelong memories.
“This partnership is about more than basketball – it’s about connection, inclusion, and
celebrating the strength of the WA community – who have always been so supportive of
MSWA through our fundraising events and activities such as the MSWA Mega Home
Lottery. “We’re proud to stand alongside the Wildcats and their Red Army once again.”
Perth Wildcats owner Mark Arena added: “The Open Air Game is one of the highlights of our season and having MSWA at the centre of it gives the night even greater purpose. We value the incredible work MSWA does for West Australians living with neurological conditions, and stories like Andrew’s remind us that this game is about more than basketball – it’s about celebrating resilience, creativity, and community, and honouring those who carry the Red Army spirit through their lives.”
This year’s Open Air Game promises to be bigger than ever, with opportunities for fans to connect with MSWA’s mission. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketek.
Alongside his love of basketball, Andrew continues to grow his art business across WA, launching a new website and online store at aerogrero.com. Limited edition screen-printed t-shirts and hoodies are available for pre-order until the end of September, with all proceeds donated to MSWA.
“I wanted to give something back,” Andrew concluded. “My passion is to inspire others through art and challenge what it means to live and thrive with Parkinson’
Red Army! Get your tickets here and show your support for MSWA and your Perth Wildcats.
