The Perth Wildcats has expressed its support for its players, staff and fans as it begins to work through the State Government’s decision to indefinitely delay the reopening of WA’s borders.
The organisation’s primary focus at this time is the welfare of the team, who are currently based in Hobart.
“Our players, coaches and support staff left Perth on 27 December with the expectation of returning to Perth after the 5 February reopening date. It was a sacrifice but at least one that had a clear end date,” said Perth Wildcats CEO Troy Georgiu.
“Now, we aren’t sure when they will be able to return home, and as a club our priority is now to offer as much support as possible to the team and their families.
“We are extremely grateful for the sacrifices they are making for this club and we’re proud of the resilience they continue to show.”
The decision will also impact scheduled home games, as the Wildcats were due to play their first game at RAC Arena this year on 6 February.
“How the next phase of the schedule will look is unclear at the moment, but we’ve already begun discussions with the NBL, WA Police and the WA Government to formulate a strategy,” said Georgiu.
“The Premier stated last night that he would sit down with all sports codes, and we welcome that conversation as soon as possible to determine what our options are to ensure our season can continue with the least amount of disruptions as possible.
“Our clear hope remains to play 14 home games at RAC Arena this season for the benefit of our fans and team. We’ll work through all available options in collaboration with government and the league.”
