Perth Wildcats guard Sunday Dech is gearing up to represent the NBL Select Team in the upcoming B.LEAGUE Global Invitational in Gunma, Japan. The two-game series, scheduled for June 28 and 29, will see top NBL talents face off against Japan's B.LEAGUE UNITED, showcasing elite basketball on an international stage.
Dech, a two-time NBL Champion, is renowned for his tenacious perimeter defence and leadership qualities. His selection to the NBL Select Team underscores his consistency and toughness, attributes that will be pivotal against Japan's premier players.
Having recently rejoined the Wildcats on a three-year deal, Dech's participation in this international event offers a glimpse into the experience and resilience he brings to the team. His return to Perth marks a homecoming, and his involvement in the B.LEAGUE Global Invitational further cements his status as a key figure in Australian basketball.
The NBL Select Team comprises a blend of seasoned players and emerging stars, including fellow Wildcat Todd Withers.
The occasion is not just a chance to test himself against top international competition. It is also an opportunity to experience Japan for the very first time.
When asked what he was most looking forward to from the trip - "Just seeing the Japanese culture. It is my first time in Japan, so yeah, really excited for that,” Dech said after this week’s training session with the team.
Dech was a natural choice for the NBL Select side, and he is wasting no time making an impact during the off-season.
Asked about who he is most looking forward to playing alongside on the tour, Dech was quick to answer.
“Young Spurge. He has obviously been a DP for Sydney, so excited to see what he has got,” Dech said, referencing Sydney Kings development player Jason Spurgin.
And who is not at the top of Dech’s travel list? Fellow Wildcat Todd Withers, who was also selected for the trip.
“Todd Withers. I played with him in Adelaide. I am sick of him,” Dech joked, showing the kind of camaraderie that will no doubt serve the Select Team well in Japan.
The tour continues to strengthen the growing relationship between the NBL and Japan’s B.LEAGUE, and offers players like Dech valuable international experience ahead of NBL26.
Dech said he is also excited about the NBL’s introduction of the new Ignite Cup, a mid-season tournament with major prize money that will debut in the upcoming campaign.
“Having it in the middle of the season just adds a bit of excitement, because December and January can get a bit draining sometimes. So yeah, that will be pretty cool,” he said.
And with the NBL fixture now officially released, there is already one match-up Dech has circled on his calendar.
“Adelaide 36ers. Straight to it,” Dech said with a smile, when asked which opponent he is most looking forward to facing next season.
Dech also took a moment to send a message of support to the current crop of NBL players hoping to hear their name called in this week’s NBA Draft.
“Good luck, fellas. Go do the Aussies proud. You have been working really hard to achieve your dream, and hopefully everything comes your way.”
With his trademark energy and competitiveness, Dech will no doubt be a key figure for the NBL Select Team as they take on Japan’s best this weekend. The Wildcats look forward to welcoming him back to Perth, ready to help lead the team into NBL26.
