New Perth Wildcats import David Duke Jr. has arrived in Western Australia and has hit the ground running, meeting teammates and coaches today at the Wildcats training facilities.

After a 30-hour journey from Providence Rhode Island to Perth via Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Melbourne, Duke Jr. spoke to media and outlined his excitement to join the organisation.

“Oh, it's the winning history that's here, as well as the coaching staff, heard a lot of good things. I've talked to a few people who know the NBL, who knows specifically this organisation as well, that had really, really high things to say. And for me, just looking for an opportunity to play a really good basketball was just an opportunity that I didn't want to pass up,” he said.

Duke Jr. said Perth quickly became his preferred destination once discussions began.

“Once I got home from Phoenix, things moved fast. Within a few days I was talking with teams, but Perth was the spot I wanted the most, it’s a beautiful city.”

The former Brooklyn Net believes his defensive mindset, physicality and ability to play with pace will complement the Wildcats’ roster.

“My biggest strength is my defence. Being a bigger guard, I take pride in causing havoc on that end. I want to play fast, bring explosiveness, and add defensive tenacity. Then on offence it’s about fitting in, encouraging guys, and doing what I do while complementing what’s already here.”

Chemistry and connection will be Duke Jr.’s immediate priority as he integrates with the group on and off the court.

“Basketball is a phenomenal game, but relationships off the floor matter. I want to get to know the guys as people, because that translates on the court. Over these next few weeks, that’s going to be huge for me.”

Duke Jr. has played exclusively in the NBA and G League since leaving college, and while that pathway remains part of his long-term ambitions, he said he has embraced the opportunity of the NBL.

“I’ve watched a lot of NBL games and the pace is right up there with the G League and the NBA. I wanted to be on the floor, play real minutes and help a team win. To do that in a city like Perth is something I’m grateful for.”

The new guard says he can't wait to play in front of the Red Army in The Jungle.

“I’m feeling healthy and I want to get on court as soon as possible.”

Duke Jr. will travel with the team to Hobart ahead of the Perth Wildcats Ignite Cup clash with the Tasmania JackJumpers on Wednesday, 29 October.
