Wildcats in strong recruitment position

Perth Wildcats general manager of basketball operations Danny Mills said his team is in a strong position as it recruits the final pieces of its 2021/2022 playing roster.

The Wildcats appointed new head coach Scott Morrison on Tuesday, with the focus now entirely on new players.

Perth have seven of eleven players signed to its main roster. Two of the remaining four positions can be allocated to import players.

“We’re in deep discussions,” said Mills.

“Since the NBA Summer League finished on Tuesday night, it’s moving quickly. So we’re in discussions with agents from all over the globe, from Europe and in the States and down in Australia, and we’re excited about the possibilities.

“We’re later to the market given the changes that we’ve had, but it’s kind of been advantageous, as there’s a lot of players that have finished Summer League and the majority of the European market is full to the extent where they’re already at training camp. With our season pushed back, there’s a whole group of players trying to decide whether to stay in the G League, get to an NBA camp, or potentially come to the NBL.

“What we’re hearing is players want to come to Australia, they’re attracted to the League, they’re excited about the possibilities of being in the NBL and the track record its had over the last five years of helping NBA guys.”

The former Philadelphia 76ers head of scouting said he likes the way his new club’s team is shaping up.

“We feel very confident with the roster we have right now. There’s championship pedigree players, and adding to them in a strategic manner that’s going to put us in the best position to help Scott carry us through the season and hopefully to an 11th banner.”

Mills indicated a new recruit could be signed by the end of the week.

The Perth Wildcats depth chart currently is missing pieces in the starting front court, as well as the reserve shooting guard position.
