The Perth Wildcats Multicultural Game returns to RAC Arena this Friday, 23 October, when Perth hosts Melbourne United for a night celebrating heritage, identity and community.
Both teams will proudly wear their multicultural playing jerseys, with each Wildcats player’s uniform featuring the flags of their cultural heritage.
The Red Army can celebrate the occasion with their own Multicultural tee from the CatsGear store, featuring colourful illustrations of cultural icons from around the world.
Ahead of Friday’s game, Alex Higgins-Titsha shares his family’s story and what his Australian and Zimbabwean heritage means to him.
The Perth Wildcats forward shares what he has learned about his family’s history, with connections from Braidwood in New South Wales to relatives in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
Growing up in Sydney, different cultures were part of everyday life, through his school friends and the teams he played on. Basketball brought him into contact with people from a wide range of backgrounds, while eventually giving him the opportunity to represent his own country.
Wearing the green and gold for Australia in 3x3 and winning the Asia Cup became a particularly meaningful achievement for someone who had spent much of his early career outside the usual representative pathways.
“To represent Australia, the country I’m born in, the country I live in and where my family’s from, is like the most surreal experience ever,”
“Having that jersey, I’ll keep it forever,” he said.
With a strong connection to his Australian roots, Higgins-Titsha hopes to visit Zimbabwe and learn more about the other side of his heritage.
“It’d be cool to eventually learn some of the language and also just connect with more family members on that side of the family.”
