Wildcats Pathways Alumni Stories: Kiara Hughes

Participants study a dual diploma in Sport and Business, combining theory with work-integrated learning alongside the Perth Wildcats.

The program provides access to industry professionals, elite facilities, and real workplace environments, allowing students to build networks, gain confidence, and apply their learning in real time.

It is designed for those exploring future study or a career in sport and also offers clear university pathways and individual support, through SEDA’s MyPLAN.

Kiara Hughes joined the very first Perth Wildcats Sport & Business Program class in 2023 and has watched it evolve into a pathway that continues to expand the opportunities available to students.

That early experience gave her a front-row view of how the program has developed into a clear route for young people wanting to break into sport.

Kiara quickly learned that every opportunity counted. Working at Perth Wildcats holiday clinics introduced her to leading youth coaches and opened doors that continued well after graduation.

“Having the opportunity to work at the Perth Wildcats holiday clinics gave me the ability to meet some really prominent youth coaches around Perth, which led me to coaching more clinics for the Wildcats post the Sport & Business Program,” she says.

After finishing the program, she was offered an internship in the Events Department, assisting with daily operations and learning the detail-driven side of running major events.

“It gave me an understanding of the time and effort that goes into even the smaller details,” she explains.

Over time Kiara contributed across several areas of the organisation, including Basketball Operations, Community Clinics and Events. From setting flyers on seats on game day, to helping prepare training sessions, and coaching junior clinics.

“The office environment is consistently exciting and enjoyable,” she says. “Most team members share a background in sports, which creates an atmosphere where everyone is understanding and welcoming.”

That sense of belonging has made her transition from student to staff feel natural.

Following her internship, Kiara’s strong work ethic earned a formal role in the Wildcats Events Department.

“After the program I was offered an internship, and at the start of the following season I was hired in a more official role,” she says. “Currently I’m the main director of The Y Fan Zone that runs pre-game.”

Her experience in the program has also shaped her long-term goals and provided a stepping stone to her dream opportunity.
“My current professional path is in events in sport, but I’d love for that to evolve into event management, not exclusively within sport, but also in the broader entertainment industry,” she explains. “Eventually I’d love to tour with artists and manage concerts and festivals.”

Kiara believes the program rewards initiative.
“If you’re willing to put in the hours and work, this program will take you anywhere you want it to,” she says. “You have access to opportunities that others aren’t privy to.”

She adds that students gain direct exposure to experts across multiple areas of the industry.

“Students have a unique opportunity where they can access the real thing right next door. If they have an interest in Sport Science, we have a Physical Performance Manager in house. They can see firsthand how what they learn within the program gets transferred into the field.”

Looking back, Kiara Hughes is proud to have helped shape something lasting.

“Being one of the first graduates of the Perth Wildcats Sport & Business Program is a pretty cool thing to say,” she says. “I’m also glad to be the first graduate to have gone on to be employed by the club. Not what I was expecting when I first enrolled, but so very grateful for where it’s taken me since.”

Kiara’s trajectory within the industry sets the pathway for future students.
