Wildcats re-sign young gun Corey Shervill

The Perth Wildcats are excited to announce the re-signing of promising West Australian young gun, Corey Shervill.

The 23-year-old impressed in his first NBL season, and the new contract will see him remain a Wildcat for two more years.

“2021 was an exciting year, and I guess we have unfinished business in some ways,” said Shervill.

“Personally, I want to continue to get better as a player. I don’t think there’s a better place for me to develop than here, being around this group of successful players and coaches.

“My goal is to become a great all-round player. I base my game around defence and being aggressive on both ends of the floor.”

The sharp-shooting wing made his Perth Wildcats debut in February as a development player, and went on to play in 30 games, averaging 2.6 point and 1.4 rebounds per contest and shooting at over 40 per cent from the field.

He had a season-high nine points in a win over Melbourne United in just his fourth game.

Last month, Shervill entered the Wildcats starting five for two Grand Final games

“His 2021 season surprised a lot of people. I love how he plays the game, and I’m looking forward to him taking that next step with more opportunity,” said coach Trevor Gleeson.

“He’s really tough, athletic, he can score, he’s explosive. But we’ve only scratched the surface with Corey and now we’re looking for him to take those next couple of steps and turn into a real professional. We’re excited for his future.

“To have another home grown, West Australian, young man in the team is great. Developing local talent is something we’ve focused on over the last 10 years.”

Corey Shervill is a product of WA basketball, specifically the WIlletton Tigers junior programs, before moving further south to play for the Lakeside Lightning at SBL/NBL1 level.

He played three years of college basketball in the United States at St Edward’s University, before returning to Perth in 2020.

Despite an interrupted 2021 NBL1 West season thus far, Shervill is averaging 21.7 points (fourth in competition) and 4.8 rebounds per game for the league-leading Lakeside Lightning.

As a junior he represented Western Australia at the Under-16s and Under-20s National Championships.

Corey Shervill’s two-year contract with the Perth Wildcats will see him remain a development player in 2021/22, before being elevated to the main roster in 2022/23.
