Wildcats to Host International Series in Perth

The Perth Wildcats face Japan’s Sunrockers Shibuya and The Ryukyu Golden Kings, along with South East Melbourne Phoenix, across two double-header game days at Perth High-Performance Centre (Perth HPC), as preparations ramp up for NBL26.

It’s the first time the 10-time NBL champions will host Japanese opposition on home soil, building on the strong relationships developed during the club’s historic Japan tour last year.

The Wildcats’ pre-season trip to Japan in 2024 saw the team face reigning East Asia Super League (EASL) champions Chiba Jets, Nagoya Diamond Dolphins and Yokohama B-Corsairs. Marking the first time in club history the Wildcats had played against Japanese opposition.

That tour laid the foundation for ongoing collaboration between the Wildcats, NBL and B.League, with this year’s Perth Wildcats Invitational further strengthening ties between the leagues and countries.

“Bringing Japanese teams to Perth and continuing to build these relationships is something we’re really passionate about,” Wildcats Club Owner and CEO Mark Arena said.

“Our Japan trip last year was an incredible experience for our players, staff and club. To now be hosting two of Japan’s top teams right here in Perth is a fantastic next step.”

The Ryukyu Golden Kings are one of Japan’s most decorated teams, with six national titles to their name, including the 2022-23 B.League championship. Their current roster includes American big man Jack Cooley and two-way forward Keve Aluma.

General Manager of the Ryukyu Golden Kings, Junichi Yasunaga said the club are honoured to be invited.

Sunrockers Shibuya, based in Tokyo, is one of Japan’s oldest and most respected clubs, with this season marking the club's 90th anniversary. The team features standout performers such as American/Japanese forward Josh Hawkinson, who averaged over 16 points and 8 rebounds per game last season and recently added ex-Sydney Kings swingman Didi Louzada from the Brazil National Team.

South East Melbourne Phoenix current line-up features Boomers guard Nathan Sobey and centre Jordan Hunter. 

The Perth Wildcats International Series is an exciting opportunity to see marquee centre Jo Lual-Acuil in action, after the recent announcement of the Wildcats landing his signature.

“Bringing international competition to Perth is something we’ve been working towards for some time, and we’re thrilled to be hosting both the Sunrockers and Ryukyu Golden Kings here at home,” Wildcats General Manager of Basketball Operations Danny Mills said.

The Perth Wildcats International Series kicks off on Friday 12 September, with the tournament concluding on Sunday 14 September. Tickets are on sale now here:
