The Mental Health Game, presented by Rio Tinto in support of Lifeline WA, will see the Perth Wildcats take on South East Melbourne Phoenix at RAC Arena on Wednesday, 28 January as part of the Ignite Cup.
Mental health touches every community, including our own. This game is about acknowledging that reality and using the reach of a Wildcats home game, with the help of the Red Army, to start conversations that can sometimes be hard to begin.
The Mental Health Game will create space for awareness and understanding, with fans encouraged to wear a touch of blue as a show of support.
Players will have the option to wear blue socks during the game, with limited-edition Wildcats x Rio Tinto x Lifeline socks also available for purchase on the night.
All proceeds from blue sock sales will be donated directly to Lifeline WA, helping fund its 24/7 crisis and suicide prevention services across Western Australia.
Lifeline WA CEO Lorna MacGregor said partnerships like this play an important role in helping people feel more comfortable reaching out for support.
“Mental health touches every community, and partnerships like this help normalise conversations that can be difficult to start. The Wildcats Mental Health Game leverages the power of sport to raise awareness of mental health, reduce stigma, and encourage people to reach out for support when they need it.
We are proud to partner with Rio Tinto and the Perth Wildcats to champion mental wellbeing, celebrate connection, and ensure more Western Australians know that Lifeline WA is here to support them 24/7.”
Support will also come through the on-court action, with Rio Tinto donating $500 to Lifeline WA for every free throw the Wildcats make during the game.
Matthew Holcz, Rio Tinto Iron Ore Chief Executive, said Rio Tinto was proud to support the game and the message behind it.
“At Rio Tinto, we know mental health is a team sport and we’re stronger together. Rio is proud to support the Perth Wildcats Mental Health Game to champion wellbeing across our community and help raise vital funds for Lifeline WA.”
A Halftime Celebrity Showcase will feature on the night, presented by 92.9 Triple M! Stay tuned for the list of celebrities to be revealed here from Monday, 19 January and Triple M Breakfast with Xavier and Katie.
Perth Wildcats Owner Mark Arena said the club was mindful of the responsibility that comes with its platform.
“Mental health is something that touches so many people in our community,” Arena said. “If this game helps even one person feel less alone or more comfortable reaching out for support, then it matters. We’re proud to work alongside Rio Tinto and Lifeline WA to use our platform in a way that is genuine and focused on people.”
Tickets are on sale now with part of the proceeds from every ticket purchased supporting Lifeline WA, ensuring the night delivers meaningful support alongside awareness.
