FIRST QUARTER:
Illawarra opened strongly from long range and found early rhythm through JaVale McGee inside, while Perth hit back through Kristian Doolittle and Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. as the game quickly became a physical battle around the rim.
Ben Henshall lifted the tempo defensively and Elijah Pepper brought instant pace in transition, before Noah Kouakou-Heugue three-point play ignited the arena and briefly put the Wildcats in front.
Illawarra responded with timely shooting in the final minute to take a 19–23 lead into quarter time.
SECOND QUARTER:
Lual-Acuil Jr. again opened Perth’s scoring in the second, but McGee continued to challenge at the rim as the Hawks built a double-digit buffer.
The Wildcats steadied out of a timeout and worked their way back through a Doolittle three-point play, Russo-Nance’s downhill drives and repeated offensive rebounds that created second chances.
A statement block from Lual-Acuil Jr. and a composed finish from Jaron Rillie right on halftime cut the margin to 34–41, keeping Perth well within reach despite Illawarra’s first-half momentum.
THIRD QUATER:
Perth produced a dominant response after the main break. Lual-Acuil Jr. threw down a huge dunk, protected the rim with force and triggered transition opportunities that swung the flow of the game.
David Okwera and Henshall capitalised, before Pepper delivered the turning point, a clean steal at mid-court and breakaway finish that sent the Red Army into full voice and returned the lead to Perth.
With Kouakou-Heugue creating extra possessions through sheer effort on the glass and Pepper drawing contact on multiple trips to the basket, the Wildcats dictated the tempo through the latter stages of the term and took a 58–52 advantage into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER:
The final term became a gripping back-and-forth battle. Lual-Acuil Jr. and McGee continued their interior duel, until JLA was fouled out with 4 minutes to play in the game. Jaron Rillie and Henshall stepped up in his absence to deliver clutch buckets to keep Perth in front.
When Jesse Wagstaff drilled a trademark corner three, the Wildcats looked set to close out a momentum-driven comeback.
Illawarra countered again through Tyler Harvey and McGee, including a late alley-oop and a three-point play that tightened the game entering the final minute.
Free throws on both sides heightened the pressure before McGee finished through traffic to give the Hawks a slim advantage in the dying moments.
With 1.2 seconds remaining, Perth advanced the ball for one final shot, but a contested catch-and-shoot attempt at the buzzer was disrupted, sealing an 84–85 result in favour of the Hawks that stunned the home crowd.
FULL TIME
Perth Wildcats 84 - Illawarra Hawks 85
Despite the loss, the third-quarter surge, defensive lift and resilience shown in the second half leave Perth with strong positives to build on as they regroup and turn their focus to playing the JackJumpers in Hobart on Wednesday.
