Match Report: Wildcats vs Taipans Rnd6 NBL26

The Perth Wildcats respond on the road with a composed four-quarter performance, defeating the Cairns Taipans 110–78.

FIRST QUARTER:
The Wildcats made a composed start, striking early through Jo Lual-Acuil Jr before Cairns answered from outside. 

Perth settled quickly, and Ben Henshall attacked the basket to find rhythm in his return to the starting lineup.

Jaron Rillie then sparked the run for the Wildcats, knocking down a corner three and backing it up with a steal that shifted the momentum in Perth’s favour.

When Henshall pulled in an offensive rebound and found Kristian Doolittle for a strong finish, Cairns were forced into their first timeout with Perth in control.

The Wildcats continued to move the ball with confidence, Rillie fed Lual-Acuil Jr inside, and Doolittle continued to find ways to score as Perth built scoreboard pressure.

A powerful put-back and three-point play from Lual-Acuil Jr highlighted a dominant opening term as Perth hit 30 points and took a 30-22 lead into quarter time.

SECOND QUARTER:
Sunday Dech opened the second term in style, drilling a three after forcing a turnover as Perth lifted their defensive intensity. Rillie was forced to the bench with foul trouble soon after, but the Wildcats continued to control the tempo through their half-court execution and defensive effort.

Elijah Pepper then ignited the game, knocking down shots in rhythm and lifting the energy as Perth pushed the lead beyond 14. Cairns continued to rely on quick shots from deep, but the Wildcats made them pay in transition as Doolittle and Lual-Acuil Jr combined inside.

The highlight of the quarter came when Pepper spun through traffic and dished to Next Star Noa Kouakou-Heugue, who rose for a two-hand dunk to claim his first NBL points.

Lat Mayen capped off the half with a corner three as Perth entered the main break with a commanding 60-42 lead and in control on both ends of the floor.

THIRD QUARTER:
Perth opened the second half with one of their best run plays of the season. Crisp ball movement through multiple hands ended in a strong finish from David Okwera, who also completed the three-point play to continue the Wildcats’ momentum.

Lual-Acuil Jr then blocked a Taipans attempt on the next possession, and Henshall drilled a three at the other end to extend the margin.

Cairns responded with back-to-back triples during their best stretch of the term, trimming the lead and forcing a Perth timeout.

The Wildcats steadied through Doolittle and Pepper, while a successful coach’s challenge proved a crucial defensive moment, preventing a fourth foul on Lual-Acuil Jr.

Kouakou-Heugue then took control of the quarter, attacking the rim, pulling in offensive rebounds and sparking a 10-point run as Perth pushed the margin beyond 20. Pepper added another late basket before the Wildcats closed the term ahead 88-62.

FOURTH QUARTER:
The Wildcats refused to ease off, opening the final term with another defensive play from Okwera that led to a Lual-Acuil Jr dunk in transition.

Cairns challenged a call in an attempt to halt the run, but the unsuccessful review summed up their night. Marcus Lee fouled out on the play, and with rotations stretched, the Taipans were left to fire from the perimeter in desperation.

Kouakou-Heugue muscled inside for another strong finish, Henshall continued his confident night from deep, and Pepper remained composed as Perth surged past the 100-point mark.

Jaron Rillie then capped off the scoring with a clean three from the top as the Wildcats closed out a dominant 110-78 victory.

Head Coach John Rillie praised the group’s preparation and connection, crediting the team’s focus in the lead-up to the game.

“Our preparation was purposeful and it carried straight into the game. This was the most connected we’ve been, with contributions right across the floor.”

Rillie said defence was the foundation of the win.

“When you are disruptive defensively, good things happen. We rebounded well, lived in the paint and played with confidence.”

Pepper said the group responded the right way after a tough loss.

“We stayed connected and everyone played their role. Sometimes a road trip and a challenge can bring you together, and tonight you could feel that in the way we played.”

Lual-Acuil Jr led the way with 24 points, while Doolittle delivered 18 and Pepper added 18 in a breakout showing. Henshall and Rillie also hit double figures as Perth spread the scoring load and produced a genuine team response on the road.
